2016 Animal House Structure

It’s not a Golf Trip without the Animal House tourney.  So we are to explain how this all works. It seems like some have some short term memories on some of the details.  Let’s write this shit down for you.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • The team with the most points wins.
  • This is not complicated.
  • A professionally made scoreboard will be supplied.
  • This is the 3rd running of the current Animal House format and is more or less the same as previous years with some minor tweaks and adjustments.
  • Everyone throws in $60 ($50 for the Animal House  tourney, $10 for the guess the number of birdies)  And we pay up front.
  • Four teams of four golfers based on handicaps.
  • The game is all about collecting points for your squad to hoist the Animal House championship and win the money.
  • In the various rounds, teams will get into 2-somes and face off against other two-somes to collect points.  We will have a per-determined schedule.  You’ll also rotate through your teammates so that effectively you are guaranteed to play with each of your teammates.
  • We’d love your input to improve if possible.  We’ll likely pretend to listen and then not change anything.

As you know we will be drafting the teams up and to aid in crafting the winning squad you might want to know how this Animal House tourney is structured.

POINTS:

The points are the name of the game here folks.  You can earn points by winning matches, throwing it stiff and getting a KP and draining a bomb for a birdie.  In another words, matches, KPs and birdies get you points.

(1) Matches:

First and foremost this is a tournament about your team and winning matches.  That’s really the major point to be taken away from this.  We’ve designed this to be Team centric.  I want guys cuddling together for those points.

If you aren’t sure about these various games check out the link to read up on them.

Round 1 – Thursday – Talking Rock

  • Game: 2 vs 2 CHICAGO
  • Pairings: AD vs AD, BC vs BC
  • 4 points per match
  • 1 point for the best individual Chicago score for each of the Tiers
  • 2 points for the best team combine Chicago score
  • Total available points in Round 1 = 22 points

Round 2 – Friday AM- Salmon Arm

  • Game: 2 vs 2 TWO MAN BEST BALL (also known as 4 ball)
  • Parings: AB vs AB, CD vs CD
  • 4 points per match
  • Total available points in Round 2 = 16 points

Round 3 – Friday PM – Salmon Arm

  • Game: THE MEDLEY – it returns, with a twist*.
  • Parings: AD vs AD, BC vs BC
  • 4 points per match
  • 2 points for the best AD score
  • 2 points for the best BC score
  • Total available points in Round 3 = 20 points

* Here’s how this work:
– Holes 1-6:    Two man scramble (easy)- Holes 7-12:  Shamble (medium)
– Holes 13-18  Alternate Shot (hard)
– This is a stroke play event….not match play. You play till that ball is in the damn hole.
– During the first 12 holes (scramble and shamble), each partnership must use at least 4 shots from each golfer.  The strategy is up to you.
– Finally, just for clarity purposes, in the final 6 holes partners alternate tee shots.  It doesn’t matter who hit the last putt, the tee shots go back and forth.

Better make hay there as the next 6 holes get a little tougher as the format switches to a shamble.  A shamble is where both partners tee off and then go to the best tee shot where each partner then plays his own ball to finish the hole.  The partner with the lowest score on the hole counts for his team.  Last year we played BEST BALL here.  Best Ball is a little too serious for the MEDLEY.  The final 6 holes will be the toughest format out there – alternate shot.  No matter how big a lead is, 6 holes of alternate shot can flush it in a hurry.

Also note: During the alternate shot portion, every golfer still shoots for the KP.  However, the 2nd shot is played in accordance with alternate shot rules.  I’m running out of Moreovers and furthermores, but in addition: Bonus points available for birdies in this round are only applicable during the final 6 holes (alternate shot).

Round 4 – Saturday AM – Talking Rock

  • Game: 2 vs 2 CHICAGO
  • Pairings: AC vs AC, BD vs BD
  • 4 points per match
  • 1 point for the best individual Chicago score for each of the Tiers
  • 2 points for the best team combine Chicago score
  • Total available points in Round 1 = 22 points

Round 5 – Saturday PM – Talking Rock

  • Game: TWO MAN SCRAMBLE STROKE PLAY
  • Parings: Each teams will have a  Team 1 and a Team 2.  Team 1 must have their A golfer and Team 2 must have their D golfer.  In more simple terms, make your own teams, but AD and BC is not an option.  Or in other-words, it’s an A golfer with a B or C.  Your choice!
  • 4 points per match
  • 2 points for the best Team 1 score
  • 2 points for the best Team 2 score
  • Total available points in Round 5 = 20 points

Final Round – Sunday AM – Tobiano

The Golf Trip doesn’t start until the back nine on Sunday.

Arguably the best course in the Province, Tobiano will provide amazing views for the gallery as the race for The Animal House trophy comes to a conclusion.  The gross scores from each golfer will be kept after each of the first 3 morning rounds.  Then the golfers will be ranked 1 to 16.  From this list, the golfers will play heads up match play (no handicaps applied) with their nearest neighbour on the leader board. 1v 2, 3v4, 9v10..etc. Obviously teammates cannot play each other, which would require small changes to the matches.

  • Game: 1 v 1 match play – The way the game was meant to be played.
  • 4 points per match (8 matches total remember)
  • Total available points in the Final Round = 32 points
  • The schedule will be determined Saturday night depending on a number of factors.  We’re gonna need to get walkie talkies to keep up with the action.

All told this is the guts of the trip and there are 132 points available.

(2) KPs:

During each round of 6 rounds there will be KPs available on the par 3s. Get a KP and your team gets a point.  Simple as that.

(3) Birdies:

During each of the four morning rounds (ie not the second round on Friday & Saturday other than the alternate shot portion of the Medley) every time you get a legitimate birdie, your team gets a point.  Simple as that.

And that’s how it works.  This is a match heavy format with points awarded for winning teams. But even if you’re out of a match, birds and KPs will also contribute to your teams success.
